I have special "date" plans tonight. Staying in with Mrs. C.; kids are gone, we have about a 90 minute transition period to fill from the point where a movie would be cool to a point where a lava lamp will be everything we could need... I want something that's trippy, entertaining and rentable at our decent biga$$ blockbuster... Any ideas?

Willy Wonka is too creepy.
We've got Yellow Submarine.
We also have lots of computer and animated short DVDs, the minds eye, and that ilk, plus we have the Disney classic Fantasia.

Any other ideas?

I must concur. Good call.

Although I must say that I am opposed on principle to mixing television and seriously mind altering drugs. It can lead to watching things like "My Cousin Vinnie" and thinking it a masterpiece of cinema.

Go sit under the trees and kick back. If you have pets, let them out and watch them. Let nature creep up on you as the sun goes down. Be quiet and listen.

Some of my favorites:

Happiness
Trainspotting
Adaptation
Dr. Strangelove

But the one I'll recommend here highly is "Brazil."

Of course, I've got a bit of a twisted side when it comes to movies.

Did some digging around - this sounds downright nutty, and perfect.

Hoo - it's a good chance of rain tonight, so we'll likely be homebound. I've rigged the house for as much visual fun as possible. The propane fire sculptures are all set-up on the patio, so we can sit in the hottub and watch the flickers. The koi pond is clean and the waterfall is sounding damn delightful. Got the house filled with tuberose for the fragrance, broke out all the burningman colored lights and ropelights so there won't be a yellow incandescent anywhere in sight. The faux fur throws are all around, and the sharp objects hidden. Lava lamps are already warm. The phones are all turned off, the curtains drawn and it should be pretty damn cozy. We'll go out early for light sushi and then come back home and start on the voyage. I'll write if I find dwarves.

I heart ryding? Rent? Sheesh, I much prefer owning... :D

"City of Lost Children"--excellently crafted bit of film that should definitely meet the weirdness quotient. Now that I think of it, if I didn't need to do last-minute repairs to my tax returns, I'd fire up the laserdisc player and slap that puppy in...it'd dovetail nicely with the mood I'm in.

"The Barfly" some of Mickey Rourke's finest work.

You guys are playing in the trippy movies kiddie pool if you haven't mentioned Eraserhead. No plot, no characters, just bizzarro land. In fact, kinda makes you feel like checking yourself into a mental hospital, so ... maybe not the best choice for a nice evening with someone special. Probably a slim chance of finding it at Blockbuster. Your best bet is a $10 purchase on eBay.

It's too late for tonight, but get The Ruling Class for tomorrow night. You're welcome.
