This week we pay homage to the coming winter months and focus primarily on gear designed to keep you pedaling even when it's snowy and cold out.

Bell Star Pro Aero Helmet

Bell Star Pro Aero Helmet

The Bell Star Pro is billed as an aero helmet with choice. It includes a magnetic shield if you prefer to ditch the sunglasses, and it's outfitted with retractable vents that allow riders to choose between better air flow or improved aero efficiency without switching helmets. We're going to try it out this weekend at a snowbound cyclocross race, thinking the closable vents will also help us stay a little warmer -- and maybe go a little faster, too.

Mud Tires from Michelin, Vittoria and Vee

CX Tires For Mud

With a slate of snowy, muddy CX races on the horizon, we'll be testing (from left to right) the Michelin Mud2
, Vittoria Cross XL Pro
, and the 40c Vee XCX
. Which will grip and not slip?

Bellwether Convertible Coldfront Jersey

This 2-in-1 jersey with zip-off sleeves from Bellwether

Bontrager Race Windshell Glove

Bontrager Race Windshell Glove

Made using Bontrager
's premium winter-weather material, profila, these easy-to-spot gloves are claimed to provide windproof protection for cool and windy weather. We'll venture into the polar vortex to find out if it's true.

Lake CX 145 Winter Shoes

Lake CX 145 Winter Shoes

If your feet are warm, chances are the rest of your body is, too. We'll see if the Lake CX 145
's do the trick.

Nikola Lateral Motion Pedals

Nikola Pedal

We got our first look at the innovative design of the Nikola pedals back at Interbike and now have a set in hand (or rather, under feet). These are the steel version (there is also a lighter Ti version) that have 25mm of lateral movement in an effort to increase efficiency and improve power output. Designed by a speed skater, the lateral movement mimics the motion of a skater at speed. Moving the pedal across the spindle in our hands, the action is very smooth, but weight weenies might want to look elsewhere, as they are not particularly light.
