That's pretty standard cross gearing. I run 38/46. Some run a 44 (big) some a single ring & others use a compact. I've never needed anything higher than a 46-12 in a race. You will need to lower your FD & maybe take a couple of links out of the chain depending on what size big ring you took off.

Couple years ago Page switched from a 48 to a 46. That was maybe his first full Belgian year. Now he is back on the 48. But goes to show, its very common. That said, Frank and Mahk McCormick have been seen with road rings on there back in the day.
