moron? As I was flipping by Fox last night I caught him on Bill O'Reilly long enough to hear him say in response to why he opposes gay marriage, the purpose of marriage is to "Civilize men, protect women, and (I missed the last thing)". He then went on to blabber something about how he saw a 2-mom family with a sick-child in public and both of them were "mothering" the whiney child, which I guess is bad. What era is this guy living in, that there are stereotypical ways to "mother" & "father" a child? Everytime I see him he says something stupid, as if he is stuck in 1950's America and that the way things were done then were the proper and only way things should ever be done.

One of the great mysteries of our time...

...is how he's been able to turn his platitudes and do-as-I-say, not-as-I-do meanderings into millions of dollars. He's a posturing, moralizing phony, and people line up to pay him to tell them they're not worth s**t.

Institutional suppression

[the purpose of marriage is to "Civilize men, protect women".]

Bennett simply stated a "truth" which is firmly entrenched in this nation's power structure and mindset - that men need to be civilized and women need to be protected. It had relevance in the 18th century when the country was founded, a time when men took on rights that women were not given. Since then, however, women have burst through the barriers and have effectively gained equality with men with regard to legal rights.

Which is a problem now, because things are not equal. Not even close. The notion of "civilizing men, protecting women" still lives on, and is extremely suppressive to men. Our legal structure continues to "civilize" men while protecting women, with the result that men are incarcerated at a rate of TEN times that of women. Would women be sitting back oblivious to this totally skewed statistic if the numbers were swapped? Of course not....it would be a gigantic social issue demanding change. So why do we men sit on our hands on this issue in silence? Shouldn't we be discussing how our system of injustice should be overhauled so that it truly becomes just system? .

The problem I see is that Bennett's "truth" is held by not only his brethren on the Right, but equally and even more strongly by those on the Left. The recent post here in this forum regarding the Colorado football scandal is a good illustration of this "truth" in action. A Pavlovian-style "evil-male/female-victim" lynch mob mentality took over the thread, leaving no room for discussion on the issue. It didn't matter what the real truth was, and I don't think anybody knew or cared. Because Bennett's "truth" ruled, any questioning to the contrary was not acceptable and was suppressed.

What will it take for men to wake up and take a stand against the suppressive measures this society takes to "civilize" us? How much longer can we accept that our sons cannot be eligible for financial aid for college if they don't register for the draft, while our daughters get a pass..... that being a man means bringing home the bacon, while being a woman means having a choice.... that sexual expression will likely get you into trouble as a man, and get you wealthy and cared for if you are a woman.

BDDDRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIINNNNNGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
