I bought a complete Chorus group in 2006 and built up a road bike about two years ago. I've never performed any chain maintenance on this bike (no cleaning and relubing). I've only ridden the bike about 1500 miles but recently I noticed that the drivetrain was making a noise akin to the chain rubbing on the front derailleur. I then noticed that under high torque situations (hammering on the pedals from a standstill, climbing a hill, etc) that it would make 'expensive noises' like the bearings are shot or the chain rubbing the FD hard. I replaced the cranks/BB, and rear wheel and the noise didn't go away. When I replaced the chain the noises all went away. I now have a chain on the way but I'm wondering if I really wore out a brand new chain in 1500 miles or if I should have done some routine maintenance to make my next chain last longer?
