The new entry level Roubaix Elite's comes with SRAM Apex. I'm only familiar with Shimano groupsets and even there my knowledge is limited. The reviews on Apex seem to be good. Is the SRAM Apex groupset sufficient or would it be better to move up to the Roubaix Elite with Shimano 105? I think it's a $300 difference to move up.

Thanks,

H

Rather than any aspects of 'better' - consider how you like the shape and shifting of your present Shimanos, and do you think that life would become more wondrous if you followed SRAM's clever marketing?

Year or so back, I had one of my rare outbreaks of giving in to sales/marketing/trying something new, or whatever, and got SRAM on a new bike vice the Ultegra 10 speed I was riding at the time and liked a lot.

Spent more time moving the bars and brake levers around in a vain attempt to get them to my old level of Shimano-based comfort. Never did get near to liking the shifting action either.

Final solution involved a spell on EBay. Bike was re-rigged with a DA/Ultegra mix via the same route ;) Fortunately, Force levers sold real well.

I'm sure the SRAM stuff worked like it was supposed to. But I didn't like holding the levers or shifting gears with them - and what else are they for?

If you want to 'make the leap', suggest you do some serious mileage on a SRAM equipped bike first - some folk prefer them, no issue one way or the other bar being happy when riding. I do build and maintain my own bikes from ground up, so don't have to rely on bike shops and their 'bike in a box' concept.

Hope that helps

I haven't rode Apex yet, but I already know from experience that I'd take Rival over 105.

So I guess we'll see. I think Apex will get spec'd on a lot of bikes... good price point, and quite light for the money... same weight as the more expensive 105, if I recall correctly.
