The drugs and alcohol of their youth have taken it's toll....I wonder if they're going to do a reunion tour?....At least they look better than Sly Stone....

The bearded guy on the right is a fill in for the original band member that tragically died in a swimming pool accident. Rumor has it he died after drinking Jack Daniels for 48 hours straight. The replacement is filling his shoes just fine ;)

I got it...The Starland Vocal Band--one hit wonders with the song Afternoon Delight--the hairy guys sing the high part. Amazing--you'd think they were chicks from the sounds of their angelic voices.

// Skyrockets in flight--afternoon delight!

After seeing the Js initial reaction to your third floor balcony overlooking the 5' pool, I thought we'd either be scraping him off the concrete deck or watching San Diego paramedics cart him off for his future life as a quadraplegic. If he did make the jump, I don't want to know about it.

One of the founders of the Starland Vocal Band took his earnings and opened a cafe a couple miles from our house.

Good food and music and a pretty popular bar. We rode right by the place on the last RBR Tour de DC.

there was at least one woman, I know, in the Starland . . . whatever they were. Margaret Something, as I recall.
Jon Carroll is a danged good keyboardist. Afternoon Delight was one of the dopier things he ever put out. Margaret was his wife at the time, if I have that right.

Dopey. Yeah.
Although.
I always sort of liked it.
there, I said it.

some pretty suggestive lyrics from such a sweet sounding band:

Gonna find my baby, gonna hold her tight
gonna grab some afternoon delight.
My motto's always been; when it's right, it's right.
Why wait until the middle of a cold dark night.
When everything's a little clearer in the light of day.
And you know the night is always gonna be there any way.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Thinkin' of you's workin' up my appetite
looking forward to a little afternoon delight.
Rubbin' sticks and stones together makes the sparks ingite
and the thought of rubbin' you is getting so exciting.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Started out this morning feeling so polite
I always though a fish could not be caught who wouldn't bite
But you've got some bait a waitin' and I think I might try nibbling
a little afternoon delight.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.

Please be waiting for me baby when I come around.
We could make a lot of lovin' 'for the sun goes down.

Sky rockets in flight. Afternoon delight. Afternoon delight.
Did you see the episode of Arrested Development where Michael Bluth sang this song as a duet with his teenage niece at a charity auction, neither one of them giving any thought to the meaning of the lyrics? The crowd walked out disgusted. Pretty funny stuff.

I ended up going to Jon Carroll's site -- hilarious. He sticks Starland Vocal Band, for which he won a GRAMMY, in this list of sort of ad hoc projects along with all of these one-off deals.
His gigs with Mary Chapin Carpenter have been his big thing for the last ten or fifteen.

Michael Bluth and Maeby chosing that for karaoke at the business Christmas party on Arrested Development was freakin classic.
