what's going on with Julich? Paris-Nice prologue winner, then . . . nothing. What was he, 9 minutes down? Any insight/thoughts? Just not on form yet, or something else?

He has said many times that this year he is looking to be ready further into the season, and will not defend last year's victories. He has other goals this year.

They had an interview with him on OLN. Apparently his goals this year are to get the jersey in the Giro and Tour, which jives with his prologue performance as that is about the only way he is going to do it.

He hasn't started juicing up yet.

Of course. What's that got to do with Julich trying to take the jersey by winning the prologue? Or placing himself first amongst his teammates and hoping CSC wins the TTT on stage 5 thereby possibly putting himself in the jersey.

He only wants to wear the jerseys for a few days and hopefully win a stage or two along the way (and that's like a 2-3 yr plan) but Julich has no illusions about his role with CSC. He'll be riding support in both the Giro and the Tour so he's going to need some great shape. He's saving it all for May and June this year. Actually it wouldn't surprise me if the entire CSC team was a little anemic results wise compared to the last couple years - I think they are putting a lot of eggs into the Basso basket.

I think CSC will try to play tactics in the TdF this year. Get Julich the jersey early, and then send him in the breaks on some key stages. Force the other GC teams to chase. It's a bit different than the LA formula, but CSC has the flexibility to pull it off, IMO.

Julich is on record saying

he wants to retire having helped someone take GT overalls. He knows he's not the guy so he now wants to be the guy behind the guy. He's dedicated this year to Basso, saying he has nothing personal to prove like last year. He only wants the feathers in the cap of a prologue or 2 which would give him a day or so in the leaders jersey for himself.
