Just had to post this photo of my little one. On his new balance bike, (notice the Ted King sticker on the stay)... he went to the livestrong ride this weekend and loved all the bikes, and has been riding his tricycle like a madman... he met chris carmichael this weekend too, so he's well on his way to becoming a biker...

balance bike

cute, but what is that thing?

its a balance bike.. teached kids balance rather than relying on training wheels... just basically a bike with no drivetrain, they start out by walking, and end up pushing and gliding on it... he's just getting the first step down..

If you kid can't ride a regular 2 wheeler before kindergarten you are definately doing it wrong.

The kid unit looks quite happy with the BB. The funny thing is in the days before the BB we used to just take the pedals off our kids little bikes. They would be riding without training wheels in under a day.

what is the cost benefit ratio for a balance bike?
seems like most of the balance bikes seem to be pretty spendy. My plan is to get a similarly sized kids bike and remove the drivetrain - instant balance bike, and once they get the balance thing down, the drivetrain can go back on.

We did this with my daughter when she was 4. All we took off was the pedals though. Over the course of 2 days and about 1.5 hrs total practice time, the pedals were back on and she was riding the neighborhood. Best thing I ever did for my back. This weekend, my 3 yr old boy's bike gets the same treatment. I'm not even considering another way for him to learn.
