Kuat Sherpa vs Thule 916XTR T2 rack

I have done my hitch rack research and have come down to a decision between the Kuat Sherpa and the Thule 916 XTR T2. The Kuat cost $20 more and is 20 pounds lighter. The Thule can be expanded to 4 bikes and the Kuat can add a repair stand. Has anyone had any negative experiences with either rack or company?

I'm down to the deciding on the Kuat NV ( for 2" receiver) or the Thule 916 XTR T2. I'm leaning more towards the Kuat even though I will probably have to purchase a drop hitch extension to use it on my 2009 Jeep Wrangler. While I do like the Thule rack their resistance to weather leaves a little bit to be desired. I currently have two Thule racks and normally leave them on the back of my vehicles year round exposed to Connecticut weather and neither one fared as well as I would have liked. If you are a Jeep Wrangler owner the current edition of JP magazine has an article on four different hitch mount tray style bike racks including the Kuat NV and the Thule 916.
Purchased the Kuat NV and rec'd it a couple of days ago. Will assemble an install (hopefully) it over the holiday weekend.
I purchased the Sherpa a couple of weeks ago. I bought it for the weight, I do not leave it on all the time. Impressed with the build quality. I was looking at the Thule & Yakima but the weight! Kuat NV can be expanded to carry 4 bikes.

I know this is an old thread, but i was wondering if you guys have any updates on the Kuat NV racks since you have had them for a while. I cannot decide whether I should get the Thule T2 or spend a little more and get the Kuat NV
Still enjoying mine. Had an issue with the locking pin key not engaging at times and was sent a new one. Also replaced some galvanized screws with stainless steel ones. That's it.
I purchased a Kuat NV rack nearly a year ago. I absolutely love it!!! Best rack I've ever seen and owned. Easy to use, built quality is outstanding and the customer service is superb! You can't go wrong with Kuat!!!
also loving my Kuat NV. its been on on the car since march and i've had zero problems. customer service is also great with Kuat. I noticed some suspect welding at the plate for the trail doc post. I sent them a picture of it and they sent me out a replacement plate no questions asked.
Few months since I purchased a T2- very happy with the purchase. I store it in the garage when not in use. Its a bit heavy but the solid construction was part of the reason I bought it.
I have the Sherpa, and I love it. It's super light, and rock solid (smaller hitch, no adapter). My only beef with it might be how the plastic wheel holders fit into the metal frame. As long as weather-aging doesn't cause the plastic to fail or loosen, which I have no reason to believe it will at this point, than it's a good design. My only other complaint is that it arrived with more scratches than I like to see on a brand new item. Not deep scratches, but if you play a guitar, you'd know what I mean when I say it looks like buckle rash. I think they should have wrapped it in foam sheeting instead of just cardboard bracing. Also, the frame has a pretty deep nick or two, but they're painted so it looks like the metal was probably banged on something sharp during the manufacturing, before it was painted. It's a minor cosmetic thing, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I want new things that cost a pretty penny to come to me in flawless condition. I did go out and buy some foam plumbing insulation tubes to wrap a bit around the back strap to fit up more snuggly, so I would't have to pull the strap so tight to fit a narrow road tire. I was concerned that over time, that pulling it down at such a sharp angle might lead to braking the strap where it connects to the wheel holder. It's actually part of the holder plastic, not a separate peace.

The Sherpa is new to me, so I can't speak about longevity, but it is rock solid and well made. The hitch bolts to the frame (some assembly required) instead of being welded, probably for shipping size reasons. I suspect if any serious wear occurs over time, it will be rust at those bolts. Thule products are generally constructed like bull dozers, but they also feel like they weight about as much as one, too. I wasn't aware of Kuat, I only found it after much googling because I was looking for an alternative too Thule. I read to many user reviews complaining about them rusting through in a relatively short time. I think the Kuat is a superior design to Thule, but only time will tell about durability and weather damage. I'll probably take it off the car and store it in the attic during winter, so the Sherpa being so light weight was another major thing I was looking for. One of the lock nuts for a wheel holder came with messed up threads that wouldn't take the bolt. Kuat's customer service was fast. I got a human on the phone quick with no hassle. When I asked if they wanted me to send the defective part back, they said there was no need to, and they sent me a replacement part that left them the day I called about it, no questions asked.

Thank you for your quick follow ups. I really appreciate it.

I just purchased the Thule T2 via Amazon and it is suppose to arrive tomorrow. While i really wanted to spend the extra $100 and get the Kuat NV (partly because it looks so much than any other bike carrier) I had to step back and tell myself that at the end of the day the rack is only going to be on my Escalade when I ride on the weekends. This is my first platform bike rack and I just hope my new Specialized Tarmac doesn't fly off the back of my vehicle when I am on the freeway.
I've had a T-2 for a couple of years. Generally good, but heavy. At times when there's been a heavy dew or mist when traveling, the slide adjuster for the wheel clamp just does not work. It won't lock in place. Maybe a one-off with mine, or friction lock may be a little different on new ones.

It's been almost a year since I purchased the Kuat NV and I'm very happy with it. I most definitely recommend the Kuat.
