I'm starting to think they're all worthless, that you're going to get sh!t whether you're "protected" or not. Especially since the line between spyware and viruses has gotten so blurred.

I've been using Computer Associates lately, and like it a lot. But I still have to clean computers with malwarebytes every so often.

I have been using Computer Associates for close to 10 years and have never had a virus get in on any of at least 8 boxes, and have been using Malwarebytes since the good doctor recommended it 8 months or so ago.

However, my daughter and son-in-law managed some nasties until I put malwarebytes on theirs (not a virus though)

Norton and Mcaffee suck ballz - they take up huge amounts of system resources and make your computer slow, in addition to a huge laundry list of other problems that are documented extensively elsewhere on the web. I run avast antivirus and have no problems with it, but I never get viruses even tho I am not especially careful.

We use Symantec at work. Yesterday I was watching a press conference on seahawks.com and went to click on another video - it started saying I need to update Adobe Reader. I clicked the link and it just sat there.

My computer was POWNED!! With the help of our network administrator, I reinstalled the OS and all that jazz. We connected it back up to the network and BAM! Turns out the problem was on my network profile - back to installing the OS and BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Computers suck sometimes. And no, I promise I didn't visit any porn sites or do anything weird :)

Good luck over there

Nothing. I've been running Vista since the betas and haven't had a problem to date.

People love to pile on anti-spyware and antivirus programs thinking it is fort knox security and then wonder why their computers turn to ****.

Go to a produce store.

Buy an apple.

Put it on your computer.

Problem solved.

Or so I hear.

i deleted the damn mcafee. i swear it was worse than a virus. it was really slowing down my pc. i'm pretty careful about downloading stuff and opening files. i'll probably just download some trial stuff every so often and run it then delete it.

Dr Roebuck turned me on the malwarebytes.org. It's free and a great program. The first time I ran it, it picked up 117 different problems

I still have McAfee too for the day to day but I run Malwarebytes once per week

Ditto....I run M-bytes once a week. Again thanks to the Doc. Own the full blown version of M-bytes and run it once a week. Also run windows defender and Norton, but with only one firewall at a time.

Between all that I'm using, nothing gives me problems. For all those curious about protection, Malwarebytes rocks. Use it. Buy it. It works.

I love these threads. I do this crap for a living in just amazes me what people can do the their computers today. I run Simple AVG anti virus. I run my computers behind a NAT'd Firewall. As long as I teach my kids not to click on anything that offers to clean viruses or sell them stuff really cheap. Obviously P()rn is the worst but so are warez sites and music sharing no matter what they say. There some pretty simple rules to live by. Turn off Cookies, Shut down all pop ups, don't click on free offers, quizzes or stupid things that pop up. I live by that and have not had a Virus or Spyware attack in years. My kids on the other hand have not faired as well. So with the latest set of computers and Vista Home Premium I have locked down their ability to download anything without me knowing about it. Sucks for them, saves me time rebuilding computers!

Shutting down all pop-ups can be a PITA. They are needed for some very legitimite puroses. I use that selectively with the Vista Home Premium. But still run all the anti- programs.

I do this shite for a living as well, and I've also never had a virus or spyware attack. But f-ing a ... we wouldn't be worth much at our jobs if we couldn't keep our own computers safe.

For extreme cases. On the PC labs on campus (college students are terrible about pc hygene) we use DeepFreeze. It keeps malware away. The downside is that you cannot save any, and I mean any, changes to the system with it frozen. I have it on the laptop I travel with, and keep it frozen most of the time, save necessary stuff to a USB thumbdrive.
