I just got these short-reach Microshift shifters installed on my son's Trek 1.2. The original Shimano shifters had a very large throw/range of motion on the brake lever shifting and the thumb shifting took adult strength, so he really was struggling. These are the Microshift shifters designed for smaller hands (kids, women) and they REALLY make a big difference. SB-R492S is the model, in case you're interested. They are 2x9.

I got them from Patrick at BestDerailleur.com and the transaction could not have been any smoother. From Taiwan to my door (Virginia, USA) in seven days.
