I haven't posted any pictures in a while so I took some on the way home. Since the usage of Multi Use Trails is a topic of discussion lately, here are some shots of the stuff surrounding mine. Some nice gang related grafitti, one of four 90 degree turns in a 200 foot section, junkyard next to the MUT, and a couch that I think I owned in college.

The MUT fast lane

This is the section of the MUT that I speed through. The HID headlight really comes in handy on this section at 5 am. The last shot is Campy versus Bigbill. I totally kicked campy's ass. I really loved that wheelset, I bought it from Excelsports in Jan 1999 and it had about 50K on it. I am going to cut the spokes and strip all the usuable parts out of the hub before tossing it.

Being stationed at Holloman, I almost forgot what greenery looks like!

Are there many cyclist due to the high cost of living there?

I see more everyday. I think that traffic is a bigger factor than the price of gas. It was always expensive out here. A gallon is $4.60 on Lanai. I have co-workers who live near me on the West end of the island and I can usually beat them home by 20 or more minutes on my bike. Driving in would save about 20 minutes so it all breaks even time wise. We exist with one car that we use for shopping. My son is in kindergarten and he rides to school everyday with my wife following on her bike. I think that he has to be in third grade before he can ride by himself. It has been a record year for rain so we are now waiting on brush fires that will start popping up next month when it starts getting hot. The fires made the commute interesting a couple of times last summer. That is why I carry a camera.

That's great that your son can ride to school. Training wheels or no?

I don't think my wife could handle the logistics of escorting three bike riders to school even though it is only a few blocks. Even then we would have to get all three kindergartners to agree, too, which is no easy task.

Just walking them to and from school is like cat-herding.

We got rid of the training wheels about 18 months ago. Two weeks ago I had a day off and rode to school with him. His bike was a Haro 16" BMX bike and I noticed that he was bunched up and wobbling along. He now has a Specialized Hot Rock 20" with six speeds, grip shift, and a suspension fork. He has cut his commuting time in half.

Museum

Hello Bigbill,
Have you seen the Pacific Aviation Museum at Pearl? How far along is it? Thanks for the pics, excellent as usual.

They get more stuff all of the time. Currently they are renovating a hangar for their indoor displays. I hope that it is finished before I transfer next year. One issue yet to be fully addressed is the question of security and access. The museum is on Ford Island which is still a Navy base with a gate and sentry. The Missouri is on Ford Island but the tourists can buy a ticket with the tour company at the Submarine Museum that will get them onto the island and includes admission. I guess the same thing could happen for the aviation museum, but the parking is probably inadequate since the Sub, Aviaton, and Arizona would all share a parking lot. Typical, build the attraction and then build the infrastructure.

Sorry to see that hub gave out so young. It's sad to see when parts are struck down before their prime. Give your campy a hug tonight everyone; you never know when a young tragedy like this could strike home.

Nice pics. I need to bring my camera along on another ride soon.

There was some nice cloud cover today that would have made for some dramatic rolling shots but it was really windy. Between the extra wind that the fenders catch and the random patches of gravel from the floods last month, taking rolling shots has taken on a new level of difficulty. I need both hands to drive. I did chase down some guys on mountain bikes and saw another Soma (guess there are two on the island now).
