My friend is cleaning his bike and asked me what oil he could use for his chain that he already had in his garage. Would the oil that he uses for the chain on his chainsaw be an acceptable substitute? Is it on the light or heavy side? I am chainsaw-impaired.

Do a search on "homebrew" or "home brew" and you will have an answer. Basically many find a mix of oil and mineral spirits (1:3-4) ratio to work well. Chainsaw bar lube or engine oil will work when thinned.

Thanks, I should have known there would be a long history to this topic. I am still working on my 4 oz bottle of Finish Line web lube. I clean and lube 4 chains about 3-4 times per year and I still have plenty of lube.
