So, I have decided to make the effort of commuting as many days a week as I can. I have a number of parts layig around for a new bike, but don't have a frame/fork. What I would like is as follows:

-comfortable
-road spacing
-cantis
-rack and fork mounts
-rear hanger (bad knees)
-cheap!

I constantly peruse Ebay for frame/fork combos, but I was wondering what many of you would recommend. I would be riding over a major interstate, so the more versatile the better. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you need a Soma Double Cross. It is comparable with a Surly but has better tubing. Get it with a steel fork and some 28mm tires and that will take care of your comfort. Get a smaller big ring (Salsa is a nice choice) like a 46 or 48 with a 12-26 cassette. A 39X26 should cover the overpass.

Thrift shops, garage/rummage sales, local craigslist, classifieds on the site here. Find an older 1970-1990 MTB and roadify it. I paid $8 for the one I'm working on at a thrift shop, got a bit more than that into it now. Just put some Serfas Barista tires on it last night for a more roadish feel, will have to see how they hold up.

You did say "cheap". :D
