After swapping slicks on and off my MTB, I got sick off all the effort and just ordered a Surly Cross Check complete. I am somewhat new to road biking (yes I know it's not a road bike, but I'm a big guy and didn't want to trash an aluminum frame). I haven't really been on drops since the OLD, OLD, OLD Schwinn Varsity that I abandoned at college (wish I hadn't done that).

In any case, I look down at the chainline formed by the double and it looks pretty nasty whenever I go up into the larger cogs. I figure this is largely do to short chainstays (and a long BB spindle). So, is it a good idea to get the wheel farther back into the dropouts in order to clean that up. Since I will be using this almost exclusively on road, would it benefit to elongate my wheel base in this fashion?
