Before I bash out my brains trying to figure out which wheelset best meets my needs-

Can someone tell me if my having a bike w/ an acient 1997 Campy 8-spd cassette limits my wheelset choices?

Thanx in advance.

yes.

the 8s cassette splines are shallower than the 9/10. they will fit on a 9/10 freehub, but will quickly gouge it because of the reduced contact area (8s bodies were steel, most all 9/10 are alloy).

you can either build a wheel around an 8s hub and use your existing cassette, or buy a 9/10 cassette and use 8 of the cogs with the spacers from your 8s cassette on a 9/10 wheel.

Ok, so it's POSSIBLE to do this.

But since I'm VERY technically challenged and would have to pay an LBS to do this, would it cost so much that I'd be better off looking into other options (buying NOS, waiting til Fall closeout season & buying a new bike, etc.)? I.e., could this be done for around $300?
