Hey folks,

Don't know if anyone else has had this difficulty. I've got a new pair of wheels, Velocity Aerohead rims, Sapim spokes, and Novatec hubs. Just went to install the cassette, and for some reason I can't get the campagnolo lockring to thread in.

That goes for both my 11t and 12t lockring. They just will not "bite" and engage and thread in. Just spins.

I don't know if the threading is damaged, or if I'm missing something...what can I do to get this lockring to thread in and work so I can use the wheel? Is this a common problem?

Lockring threads aren't standardized. Are you sure you're using the right lockring for the hubs?

If so, possibly a poorly formed first thread is preventing you from getting started. Remove the cassette, and use a small half round file to file a small chamfer, about one thread wide on the inside lip of the freehub body. That should make picking up the thread easier (if it's the same).

info...

How new are your lockrings? Campy changed from 26mm to 27mm threads in 1999 when the oversized axle hub was introduced. Any recently made hub should have the larger diameter threads. The smaller ones won't work.

It would be odd for a decently manufactured hub not to have a chamfer on the threads, but you could easily have burrs that are not allowing the lockring to start easily. You might have as much luck scraping off the burrs with an Xacto knife or utility knife as using a file.

Thanks C-40. These are new lockrings that came with Campy Veloce 10s cassettes. The cassette I'm putting on is a 2009 11-25 cassette. That lockring won't thread on, neither will a spare 12t lockring I had laying in my toolbox. They're both newer for sure, so I don't think the 1999 standard is the issue. The hubs are also recent/new, so that shouldn't be the problem....I'll drop an email to Novatec just in case though.

I know the lockrings work fine, because they both work perfectly on my campy record and chorus rear hubs (I tested them to make sure).

I'll try the Xacto knife trick and get back to you. Wish me luck! Frustrating : )

Just bought new Yoeleo wheels, similar problem, spacer extends the hub to accept 10 speed cassette (new) however, lock ring is too short to reach the hub thread. Contacted wheel manufacturer, no response, contacted novatec, no response, bike shops, responded, looks like a disaster, so no good. Anyone want to buy a rear wheel?

You need a thinner spacer.

IF I put on a thinner spacer, the cassette has nothing to sit on !!!!!
Hard to provide any meaningful help when we don't know what cassette or lockring you are using (other than it is 10sp) and the thread title of the 12 year old thread you dredged may or may not have anything to do with your problem.

If you are working with a Campy cassette as the thread title implies, then there shouldn't be any spacers used. Campy 10sp, 11sp & 12sp all share the same freehub without spacers. Be sure to use the lockring that came with the cassette, as the lockrings can and do vary.

However, since you think you need to be using a spacer, I can only speculate your issue is with a non-Campy cassette. But you completely lost me, and it would seem others with your above comment.

Read my post! States i have a brand new campy 10 speed cassette. The novatec hub that is built onto the wheel is short and comes with a factory supplied spacer to extend it, to accept every gear on the cassette, i. e, without the spacer, the last two gear rings have no hub to sit on, therefore only, 8.speed.put on spacer "provided", put on last two cogs, lock ring too far from hub to reach hub thread.

Allrighty then. Sounds like you are best to keep trying to contact Novatec then.

Perhaps you can show exactly where you wrote "Campy" in either of your prior 2 posts. All it said was that it was a 10 speed cassette.

If you have to be screwing on some sort of spacer to the freehub to fit additional cogs, then clearly Novatec is using some sort of proprietary Campy compatible freehub body, for which only Novatec is going to be able to help you. Standard Campy freehub bodies do not use spacers.
