Could be several things.. like you mentioned, seat, bike fit, maybe even your choice of shorts... But if I had to guess... the fact that you went more than an hour without going numb makes me think that perhaps you just need to stand and get outta the saddle a bit more often... Especially after that first hour when your in a zone, and moving and not thinking about it as much...

oh for crying out loud!!

Between this thread and the "package management" thread, i am going to take the the physician's perogative and give you the science. You are sitting on your pudendal nerves which supply the sensory nerves to your genitalia and anus,...compression causes temporary numbness of these structures after about 20 -30 minutes. To prevent this you need to a) get a saddle with a cutout, b) move on the saddle every 10 - 15 minutes, c) sit, ie, put your weight, on your ischial tuberosities, your sit bones, not the central soft parts.

You need to press on the pedals harder. (or stand occasionally)
Hey! It's not rocket science.
What happens if you don't move your hands for 1.5 hours?

Raise your stem, get a wider saddle, blah blah blah. No one listens.

What you really need is carbon fiber. Doesn't even matter where it is on your bike, you'll instantly notice a 12.7% increase in comfort, which should give you at least another 15 minutes before yer crotch goes numb.

for what its worth, there have been no conclusive studies to show that there is an increase in erectile dysfunction in cyclists....but at 53, I am taking no chances.

Also - Remember, racing saddles are for, well, racing...they are not made for sitting up and cruising...as Mr Grumpy so eloquently pointed out, the more you hammer the less pressure on the pudendal nerves. If you wanna a cruiser, get more cush for the tush.

In many cases a proper fitting can reduce numbness or completely resolve the issue. If you're certain of your fit, you might consider something with a cut out. Depending on where you spend your time, front, back or middle - different saddles will work for you.

And if you're new to cycling and/or are getting back into it. Your fitting from 6 months ago may not be working for your current position. As you ride more your position develops.
