I'd go for the first of the two. I do know there are some new bikes out there you can get that are decent, but usually will have lower-end components (I've searched a lot when I got mine). The first one has some pretty good stuff on it for the price.

The most important thing is to get a bike that fits properly. Take a look at the Colorado Cyclist web site for some good online bike fitting info. Here is a link:

Once you have an idea of what frame sizes you should be looking at, that is the time to start looking. Ideally, you should test ride a bunch of bikes to whittle down your choices to one you really feel comfortable riding. Unfortunately, that is a little more difficult when you are shopping for a used bike.
