Ok....this is confusing...

I was trying to adjust the rear derailleur on my son's bike (campy SuperRecord 11)...when I noticed the cir-clip was almost 1/2 out from under the mounting bolt. I guess when I installed it, the cir-clip caught on the thread & pulled out a bit. I removed the derailleur to fix it...and the clip popped out on me. I re-installed it, bit I cant seem to get it back together properly....the piece with the stop tabs seems to position at the top of the derailleur mounting bolt , instead of at the bottom...does the spring have to be wound to get correct position?
Does this make sense to anybody??..I'm very frustrated by this...BTW I took it to a local shop, and they couldn't do anything...didn't want to touch it.

If memory serves me right from doing this on a couple non-Campy ders in years past, you need complete about 1/2 to 3/4's of a revolution (clockwise). The trick if I remember is getting the der past the stop nub without the end of the spring becoming dislodged again. Sorry, but I've not had any desire/need to pull apart my SR11 der or any of my other recent Campy ders that are otherwise working properly.

The easiest way would probably be to put a 3-way wrench in a vise and put the derailleur mounting bolt on the wrench. Then you can wind the spring up w/o having to hold the wrench w/ one hand. Just be careful when going past the stop so you don't scratch the body of the derailleur.

Putting the Allen wrench in the vice helps but is not necessary. I use a small pair of Channel Lock pliers, which are good because you can keep the jaws parallel. You put the jaws around the bolt and they catch the tang that sticks out (that engages the dropout). You can easily twist the plate until it is in position and then you can use the pliers to push it down into the spring retainer "tube".
