I have a set of the newer 105 (5800) compact cranks.

The 50t ring has a black plastic backing/core (this may be similar to Ultegra and DA, I'm not sure).

Anybody know if it is possible to remove and re-install this plastic piece without damaging it?

I suspect that it may be bonded in place (which would mean that it cannot be removed without damage), but just wanted to check to see if anybody knew for sure. It may just pop out but I don't want to force it.

Thanks.

You guessed right. It's bonded onto the chain ring and would be almost impossible to remove without destroying it. What are going to do--hide induction motor windings in there? :)

Well the thought had crossed my mind.

Thanks for the info.
