One week ago an 18 year old was up drinking all night and drove his parents' car into two innocent cyclists at 7am Sunday Morning and fled the scene. He was caught a short time later. Both cyclists went to the hospital. One was hurt really bad. The driver tested a .25, or 2.5 times the legal limit. People from his town on the message board are trying to skew public opinion and somehow assign blame to the cyclists. They are claiming he's young and it was a mistake. Also that cyclists should not be on the road. If you feel this is bull please post and support the cyclists. But please be civil.

Story below:

GRANBY, Conn. -- A driver who hit two bicyclists before fleeing the scene was charged with reckless driving, second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, evading responsibility with physical injury and operating while under the influence of drugs and alcohol, police said.

The Granby Police Department said it received a 911 call from a person who claimed to have witnessed a vehicle hit two bicyclists traveling west on Route 20 near Route 219 at about 7:19 a.m. Saturday.

After striking the bicyclists, the vehicle continued east on Route 20 without stopping, said the witness, who gave responding officers a description of the vehicle.

Officers found the vehicle and identified the driver as Michael McDermott, 18, of Granby.

Officers responding to the accident said they found two victims lying off the north shoulder of Route 20 in the grass down a slight embankment.

The victims' identities had not yet been released.

Both had serious injuries and were transported via ambulance to Hartford Hospital, authorities said.

McDermott was released on a $150,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 3, police said.

Sounds like public opinion doesn't matter much here. He was charged with some pretty serious crimes, and yes, he's young, but he's also an adult. He's not going to come out this well I don't think. Maybe jail time, and definitely lawsuits against him, and his insurance company for the injuries and property damage incurred by the cyclists no doubt. And, I don't think that people tend to take drunk driving too lightly these days at all.

In a couple of words. He's screwed.

Yeah, that message board is an unregulated site that is associated with the Courant, and isn't really a 'local' board. It's associated with media sites all over the country.

I wouldn't take the crackpots on this site very seriously. It's kind of like the old Yahoo comments pages were.

The kid was drunk at 7:30 on a Sunday. I don't think many sane people are going to step up and try to defend his actions.
