Red. With Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirrin, those two could make anything watchable.

Basic Instinct would've been laughed out of theaters, if not for a fearless, scenery-chewing 'femme fatale' performance by Sharon Stone.

Perfect casting, in an otherwise kinda ridiculous and trashy film.

About a third of Michael Caine's movies. Well, maybe a quarter.

A bad movie can't be saved by good actors. If I'm thinking "that movie really sucked but (whoever) was really good in it", it still sucked and I won't watch it again just to see that actor's good performance.

Not sure it would have totally sucked with a marginal actor (close though) but I'm pretty sure Taxi Driver would have been just another nothing at the time/long forgotten now 70's flick without De Niro.

Revenant

Really mediocre movie mostly saved by Dicaprio.

Revenant being a good example where all the related craft aspects of a film have to come together - direction, script, cinematography, acting etc... in order for a film to be great. Much goes wrong with Revenant, timing, believability, add'l acting and directing cinematography etc..., yet Dicarprio marginally keeps us interested.

Mediocre films with great actors don't often work - Postcards from the Edge and a few other Streep clunkers show how an otherwise great actor cannot save a film.

But a clunker of a film is usually hard to recognize as mediocre when the actors - good or great, pull it off.

Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting. If he hadn't been believable, the whole thing would have come off as cheesy and schlocky.

New Zealand also saved the Lord of the Rings movies. Way too much walking and talking about Dungeons and Dragons carp. At least there was pretty scenery to zone out to.

What'd you think the movie was going to be about going in, a rags to riches story about an unlikely ring-toss champion?

Problem with Williams is there was always a touch of Mork in many of his roles, Good Will being typical. I can see any number of fine actors who are chameleons when it comes time to tackling a role, Kevin Kline comes to mind. Fish Called Wanda, Silverado, Big Chill. He could have done justice to Good Will and would not have overplayed the part. William Hurt, Ed Harris, Paul Giamatti, Nick Nolte among others all could have done that role without hurting the movie.

LOL.

Yeah, sorry Blue, but I think most ppl are aware of what Lord of the Rings and JRR Tolkien are all about going in.

It's like going to a Seth Rogen movie and complaining that it's about a chubby scruffy Jewish guy.

Tombstone would have been just another western without Val Kilmer.

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves- it's a horrible, inexplicably popular early 90s cheesefest but Alan Rickman's Sheriff of Nottingham is the definitive performance of the role.

The Gangs of New York - it's an interesting idea for a movie but ultimately confused, terribly paced and overwrought. Daniel Day Lewis almost saves it by giving one of the greatest performances of his career in this movie as Bill the Butcher.

The Friends of Eddie Coyle - a lesser known, solid if unexceptional early 70s crime movie made incredible by Robert Mitchum's performance in the title role. He's the definitive world-weary petty criminal trying to make his last score and his ultimate betrayal (spoiler) is hard to watch. This performance stays with you.

I thought it was about going with my husband and then later saying 'hey hun, there is this tear jerker movie I would really like to see, remember how I sat through Lord of the Rings?'

I thought that movies were a bit like baseball cards, they have a certain trade value. You trade sci-fi movies and kung-fu movies for dramas and adaptations of books.

slightly off topic but related... do you think there is any Adam Sandler movie that could have been made good given the right actor?

Swap him with John Belushi maybe? Some of them might have worked.

Apologies, I didn't read that deeply into your post. I was only talking about the movie's subject matter, not it's manipulative value.
