Mo Bruno Roy has been having a great season so far, winning local singlespeed races for fun and comfortably top-10ing in the big races like the Providence Cyclo-cross Festival. She came close to podiums at Green Mountain and Charm City, but it wasn't until Ellison Park that she made her way onto a UCI podium this season with two second place finishes behind legendary sprinter Laura Van Gilder. We snagged her Seven Cycles Mudhoney Pro bike and chatted with her mechanic and husband Matt Roy about what makes the bike run. With canti brakes and the new SRAM RED 22 componentry, the bikes are slightly different than last year's models, but with updated paint and specs.

The first noteworthy feature of Bruno Roy's bike is the frame itself, a Seven Cycles Mudhoney Pro, carbon with titanium lugs, customized for her geometry. The top tube is 51.6cm effective length, while the seat tube length comes in at 46cm exactly, with a BB drop of 6.6cm. A 71.5 degree head tube angle and a 75 degree seat tube angle are employed to create the ride that Bruno Roy requested when she was working with Seven to create the bike: a middle-range handling (stiff versus agile), with stiffer drivetrain rigidity but a more comfortable range of vertical compliance.
The newest update on the bike is the switch from last year's SRAM RED to this year's SRAM Red 22, with an 11-speed 11-28 cassette in the rear and WickWerks 34×44 chainrings in the front. The lower gearing in the front proved useful on the climbs at Rochester, and those who stuck with 36×46 chainrings found themselves hurting and wishing for another, lower gear as they headed up the hill over and over.
For pedals, Bruno Roy goes against the grain and uses the same pedals as Jonathan Page, Shimano M540s, as opposed to the oft-cited CrankBrothers Eggbeater or Candy and the better-known Shimano SPDs. She also uses a saddle that we haven't seen too often this season, the Bontrager Affinity SL Carbon Women's saddle.

Unlike most racers who've shifted to SRAM RED 22 and opted for the hydraulic disc that goes with it, Bruno Roy is electing to stick to the classic cantilever brakes, using TRP's Revox Carbon brakes with SwissStop FlashPRO GHP II brake pads to stop her Mavic Ksyrium SLS tubular wheels. For tires, she's opted from the same protective latex strip on her tubulars that Katie Compton is using, the FMB hot pink latex casing.
For the weekend at Rochester, with minimal mud but some slippery sections on the course, Bruno Roy elected to run the 33mm FMB SSC PRO in the rear and the SSC SuperMud PRO in the front, which she later said was "definitely the right choice." Despite the lack of rain on course, most racers elected to run at least a front mud tire, from Frances Morrison's selection of a front Limus and rear Grifo to Raphael Gagne's decision to run Fangos on front and rear. The traction certainly helped on the hill, both on the greasy ascent and tricky descent on both days of racing.
