Is there a pill one can take for a horrible case of the procrastinations?

I have done everything possible to put off writing this damn paper. This morning I sit down with a couple cups of coffee intending to bang it out (not c0de), and fell into the lounge in a pure state of avoidance.......:mad2:

I'm a procrastinator who likens missing a deadline (or turning in crap) to punching myself in the balls (fun in theory, but something I could never do - mostly because I don' t have balls).

As it stands, I fight a desire to procrastinate every day, but have never ever missed a deadline.

These are my tricks, which are totally anal retentive and slightly neurotic, but so am I:

- Set a timer. I bought a big ol' kitchen timer just for work. When I've got a big project on my plate, I set the timer for 50 minutes and work on nothing but that project for 50 minutes. I find that at the 50 minute mark, I'll either be completely engrossed in what I'm doing, or my brain will be wandering and it's time for a short (also timed) break.

- Get a porn blocker. I use the BlockSite plugin for Firefox, but there's plenty out there. Thing is, I don't use it to block porn. I just enter in all the website addresses that my fingers wander to when I'm looking for a distraction. I turn on the blocker when I'm working, which this lets me still access the internets for research, but blocks me from my time-suck sites.

- Get started. GQ had a pretty awesome article on procrastination the other month. I found it oddly comforting to hear Stephen King say that he wakes up every morning not wanting to write, but then forces himself to just do 5 pages. That's it. Just a few words. By the time he begins, he's enveloped in his writing and can't put it down. It's nice to know that a guy can produce a metric buttload of books, even though he's a procrastinator.

The end message is: Stopping procrastination isn't about willing yourself to stop procrastinating. It's about trying out a lot of different ways to handle it, and seeing what works for you.

That being said, I've got more work that I can shake an epileptic at and could be having a kid in as soon as two weeks. So its time for me to turn on my SiteBlocker, set my timer, and get to work.

Related and possibly enlightening to show how Catzilla's method of setting up short term rewards (e.g. a break after 50 minutes) may help get longer term tasks completed since we're less likely to procrastinate as we get closer to the reward: Procrastination Gene

I had a semester to knock out a huge project that I wound up doing in a day. Unplug your interwebz, or turn off your wireless, and go for it. Also, if you have a page requirement, I actually learned an excellent tip back in junior high: Write the whole darn paper in the default Microsoft Word settings (single space, tiny margins, 11 pt. calibri font)...open the program, and write, write, write. When you've written everything you can possibly write, format the paper into the required specifications...you know, double-spaced, 12 point, Times New Roman, whatever. You'll see your paper at least double in length, if not more.
