the only reason for a longer cage is more "chain wrap" -- the ability to take up more slack. If you have a wider range cassette and/or chainring set, you need more wrap.

If a short cage derailleur will work with the parts you'bve chosen (and I think you're right that it will --you can check the specs to be sure), then there's no reason for a medium cage, unless you envision changes in the future that it won't accomodate. There's no other "advantage."

To determine needed wrap, add the difference between the rings to the difference between the largest and smallest cogs.
