I stupidly disassembled my bike (to ship the frame for repair) without removing the pedals now I'm having a hard time removing them. Any tips for removing the pedals with the cranks off the bike or is it just brute strength cause my arms sure are sore trying to get them off.

Remembering, as others have noted that the left hand crank is left hand threaded, lay the crank arm down on the floor and put the pedal wrench on the pedal so that you can use your foot or your body weight to press down on it. If the wrench ends up at an angle such that you can't do this, flip the assembly so that the wrench and the crank form a little arch (pedal raised off the floor) and press down right at the pedal.

Shift chain to big ring up front so if you slip and slam your hand you don't get teeth marks.

Pedals tighten towards the front and loosen towards the back.

Use a 10 inch long wrench or as long as possible and use the crank arm for leverage. Grip both in one hand and squeeze. This should usually break the pedals free.

^ Great advice Mootsie! Leverage is your friend. I've also put an old seat post over my wrench for added leverage.

Also great advice that I keep in my head - BACK OFF...turn towards the back of the bike to get pedals off.

And...I should say in my earlier days I too had a heckofa time getting pedals off, getting confused which way to turn. I have a scrape in my DT paint on one bike to remind me of this and the memory of smashing my fingers on my chain ring, which took a long time to heal. Ah, the fun of wrenching without knowing enough...

another trick for removing while off of the bike would be to wrap the ring with an old chain and clamp that into a bench vise.
