Found this link in the Moots forum and am not sure if this is true or not. If it is, it's a shame. Sorry if this has already been posted.

Richard Sachs Moves Production to Taiwan

CHESTER, CT (April 1, 2006): Noted framebuilder Richard Sachs announced today that effectively immediately, he will be outsourcing all production of Richard Sachs bicycle frames to Giant Bicycles, Inc. of Taiwan.

Richard Sachs' understudy, Spencer Sachs
"I've been spending too much time in the shop, and not enough time rolling in the mud with Spencer", says Sachs, from his Chester, CT home. "Tony Lo has assured me that the high quality to which my clients have become accustomed shall not suffer."

"There will be some changes in the manner in which Richard Sachs frames are manufactured, however," adds Lo.

It is not known at this time whether the first Giant-built frames will be of TIG-welded ultra-light aluminium, or carbon-fibre, but Sachs expects that the Discovery Channel cycling team will be making a mid-season jump from Trek to his new frames.

"During the last few years, we have seen a lot of success with the T-Mobile team riding our frames," says Tony Lo, "but we know that most Americans wouldn't be caught dead riding something so obviously made in Taiwan. By taking the Richard Sachs name, we hope that the cachet normally reserved for individually handbuilt frames will carry over to mass production."

"If all goes well," Lo adds, "we hope to offer Richard Sachs frames through finer retail establishments in the near future. We already have a committment for 100,000 bicycles from both the Kresge and Walton companies."

You did note the date of the press release, yes?
Yes I did. I just wasn't sure after searching for it if anyone at RBR was aware of this or not. Were you aware of this?

Methinks the APRIL 1ST date of the press release might carry special significance. I do NOT think this release would have been put out on ANY OTHER DAY OF THE YEAR.

No worries. Sheldon B. posted it on the iBOB list, and I fell for it for a few minutes too.

Ok, the secret here is for us to stop posting so that it will slowly and quietly get buried without anyone else from the lounge finding out....

Of course not, Wayne!
Richard always does what Spencer wants....;) :D

Taiwan, Giant, K-Mart, Walmart it is, then.

I wasn't real sure about the Disco switch from Trek to Giachs in mid-season, but after the Hincapie steerer debacle/furor/5,000th post, well, one can certainly see why they would....

Hi Cadence,
What a nice surprise! How are you? Send me a pm so we can chat a little. Yes, the Hincapie thing will not help Trek stock.

PM on the way.

Sorry I mentioned the Hincapie thing, the whole deal really bores me to tears now.

But what if it, just what if, it WAS a Sachs-designed, Giant-made, secret steerer that Spencer chewed on just before they sent it over?
That would explain a whole lot....

Yes, I know Terry. What a miss on my part, eh? Oh well, it goes with the fun of being part of RBR. As ridgetop wrote, at least it wasn't him. or you.

Wayne. Don't listen to them. It's absolutely true, at least where his frames are going to be made. Martek will actually be making his frames, and they'll be sold thru BikesDirect under the Motobecane and Windsor badges. Discovery is making the switch, but the lads will be on "Motobecane" frames, made with a new FeO2 alloy from Reynolds. The frame will use an updated form of the venerable lugnut construction. And in a tip of the hat to the pantographed works of art on bikes of old, each new Sachs Motobecane will come with a CD of really cool pantomime bits collected from around the 'net. Each new frame will be boxed and shipped out after being annointed with the sweat from Kerry Irons brow.

Jeez. Don't you guys get any news in Swedenland?
