<table border="0" width="700"><tr><td>Got in another great, long (for me), solo ride on Saturday. Brentwood to the coast, down the coast through Santa Monica, Venice, Marina Del Rey, Playa Del Rey, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach, Redondo Beach, then up the hill and around the Palos Verdes peninsula, then down the hill into San Pedro.

And back.

I didn't venture far into San Pedro, as I don't know the streets well at all and they seemed to be pretty nutso. So I tooled around the northern end for a little bit before heading back.

80 miles, 4000ft of climbing.

Some of the hills getting back to Palos Verdes from San Pedro were short but killer. They really didn't seem that bad going down. What gives? My Garmin showed the first one peaking at 18% and the second one peaking at 16%.

These are the first really tough rides I've done on the IF since I got it back in November. Comfort-wise, I have to say, it's everything I hoped it would be.

<hr size="1" width="650">

Palos Verdes Drive, winding around the peninsula.

A view of the bluffs off PV Drive. Some of the most beautiful scenery around.

More PV Drive.

About to descend into the harbor.

The Vincent Thomas bridge in the distance.

Same bridge, same distance.

One of the many marinas around San Pedro.

These places look abandoned, but they're not.

This wasn't abandoned either.

The first of the steep-ass hills out of San Pedro.

The second of the killer hills. The pictures just don't do them justice.

Making my way back along the strand through El Segundo.

Reaching the bridge at the end of the South Bay bike path.

Please keep posting these great rides. And please keep riding like you've been doing. I'll be wrapping up my silly Death Ride stuff in mid July and would love to head south over a weekend to do a solid ride with you.

That would redefine "awesome."

You need to document my rides, which look good in person, but never on film.

Which cam?
Panasonic P&S. I hope you don't think I'm insane enough to bring a DSLR on a ride like that.

Thanks ... Every time I post a report I think I should have gotten pics of some of the more "local" streets I take to get to the good riding. But then when I'm actually riding I'm pretty much bored silly of them.

My first real climbing was in Palos Verdes.. I spent a morning climbing all the hills in the area...ouch.....
Yeah, I ride with a group sometimes, and their usual route around PV is up Via Del Monte, down Hawthorne, and around the peninsula to PV East for another climb. But I wanted the miles this time, more so than the climbing. And I still got in 4000ft, so that ain't bad.

Just to add a bit of trivia. Natives of L.A. know this, but the correct pronunciation of San Pedro is "San Pee-dro." It's wrong, of course, but I'll bet many natives would have no idea what you were talking about if you pronounced it correctly.

We're weird that way.

San Pedro.
Palos Verdes.
Los Feliz.

We get 'em all wrong.

Cañon St. in Bev Hills too. Everyone says "Cannon" even tho all the signs have a tilde over the first n.

"Like, whats a tilde?"

I've noticed more people saying "Los Feliz" the proper way though lately. Weird.
I've gone through phases where I said everything properly. People just looked at me funny.

I love these reports. Something about the ocean. . .be it bays, waves, beaches ,whatever.. .I find just awesome. I also like to explore harbors for whatever crazy reason. So, if not abandoned, are they packed with goods or something? In the movies they are always full of drugs or stolen cars :).

You haven't been to the Bend area down there?????
Picture the windingess, bendingess, bumpyess, curvyess, meanderingess road you can imagine and then set it to motion, that is the Portuguese Bend.

Looks like some MTB'rs are doing some work in that area

I motorcycled through the area many times when the traffic got messed up but I never got the chance to bicycle it.
(Perhaps my memory of it makes more of it that it really is, but I do remember it as a place I want to bicycle someday.)

edit to add: I just went to streetview on googlemaps and it appears my memory may have romanticized it a bit and it looks as if it's been straightened and repaved a dozen times since I last was on it, bummer.

I'm still a bit confused. Is the "bend" part of PV Drive or is it a nature reserve that is separate from PV Drive?

I rode Palos Verdes Drive through that area, but never left the main road.

It is a geographic anomaly of unsettled earth that the PV Drive goes through. There is one section that does show up on maps under that name.

Maybe I just had a geographic mindset back then as it struck me as an interesting area.
