I'm headed up for my annual pilgrimage to the Rideau lakes for fishing and golf. I just got a road bike this summer and I'm thinking I should bring it along for a couple of rides. But I have a few newbie questions, since I've never considered riding there before.

- Our camp is about a mile down an oiled dirt road. If I'm using cheap tough 700x23 tires and not go crashing into potholes, should I be ok about picking up flats?
- How do the rules of the road for cyclists compare to the US?
- By my memory, most of the paved roads in the area near our camp are 2 lanes with 60mph traffic and there is no pavement on the shoulder. Would I be better off avoiding these roads completely?
