Recently had my 2 year old GT road bike stolen. I am 54 and have been riding for 3 years now and am in So California. I ride for exercise, stress relief, and for pleasure. Ride distances vary from 10 miles to 40 miles RT - depending on time availability. Not in real need for speed - my typical pace is 13MPH - 16MPH. I am still learning equipment and parts importance. I am considering an "endurance" road bike. I would appreciate your expertise and feedback on what seems to be a pretty good deal. Performance Bike has a Ridley Fenix Shimano Ultegra priced regularly at $1900USD on sale for $1150USD. The specs are below. Thanks in advance for your feedback and time.

From a value standpoint, that seems pretty good, but its really not an Ultegra bike. Sure the shifters and rear derailleur are Ultegra, but the cranks, brakes, and FD are not. In the end, that doesn't matter too much if it's a good value, but just be aware

I noticed the cranks are 52/36 (mid compact?) vs compact 50/34, which is my preference for a casual riding endurance bike (I'm the same age and have a similar ride profile as you).

The most important thing is of course, how does it ride? Will performance let you take it on an extended test ride?

I'm not a huge fan of Performance bike. Mainly because the people that work at the one in my area are generally clueless dolts (although generally pretty nice people). I wouldn't trust them to do anything to my bike beyond a basic tune up (which I'm inclined to do myself).

The upside to Performance is that they have a very liberal return policy on their bikes. I would ask them about that, the warranty, etc..., just to be sure what you are getting.

Thanks for your feedback Migen. I haven't yet had a test ride but plan on doing so soon - Performance is pretty good with test rides.

What is the benefit of a compact vs. mid compact crank?

Gear ratios. I won't go into the math, but generally speaking you get better climbing gears with compact vs mid-compact (the front rings are slightly larger).

As a old, slow, non-racer type, I prefer my compact cranks (50/34), but many don't like them. It's a preference thing. Which you prefer will depend on your riding style and the terrain. Chainrings can be changed later if you decide to. I just brought it up as a point to consider when comparing the bikes, and something to think about on your test rides...

No personal experience with that bike but seems like an OK deal. I have a Ridley Crossbow aluminum and have been happy with it. You're giving up some on the wheels though, those are low end and detract from the otherwise good quality of the rest of the bike build.

If you are from SoCal, you shouldn't have to much trouble finding a good quality used high end bike for < $1000. If I'm looking for comfort, aluminum is not at the top of my list, steel or carbon is more the mark.

3 or 4 minutes on LA craigslist found me this
