Although this "new" one day race seems a fresh addition to the racing calendar, it is actually the resurrection of the ill-fated Giro del Lazio; a race given the fateful thumbs-down in 2008.

Within this year's field of road-gladiators is one of the former winners of the Giro del Lazio, Filippo Pozzato (Lampre-Merida), who won that now defunct race in 2005.
Italian sprinters are well represented in the field - so one can safely expect one of them to be the sprint finish winner at The Coliseum this year.

This race promises to be very television-friendly as it winds through historic Roman sites of antiquity - and sometimes over Roman cobbles - which should please that segment of the race watching public for whom the scenery is almost as important as the race itself. The new catchier name and scenic route may perhaps be a sign of things to come as cycling tries to reach out to a wider audience. Given the difficult financial times for races in Italy and elsewhere, here's hoping this race doesn't get thrown to the lions!

Hail Roma Maxima! :)
