If i where to be riding on smooth roads with some very rough gravel roads thrown in would a road bike along the lines of a giant ocr or a cross bike such as a specialized tricross suit me better.

Definitely a cross bike. For years I used a CX bike as my road bike and other than a little slower handling, it worked fine.

Another builder to check is the line from Heron Bicycles. All Waterford steel, fast road or touring geometries and can fit large tires with fenders. If you go down, you haven't trashed an expensive carbon or aluminum frame. Nice lugs, too.
