2015 Sea Otter Classic

Due to product cycle timing and the increasing popularity of the discipline, the Sea Otter Classic has become the de facto trade show of choice for bike makers to unveil their new cyclocross bikes. Here are nine new bikes that caught our eye during the four-day celebration of all things two wheels in Monterey, California.

Felt FX Series

Felt rolled out a new batch of 'cross racers that are claimed to be both lighter, stiffer and more comfortable than their predecessors. Weight was shaved thanks to a new lay-up method, while the switch to a BB386 bottom bracket added stiffness. Claimed weight for the standard 55cm FX carbon frame is 950 grams; the top-of-line FRDX boasts a wispy 850 grams. That's 100 and 150 grams respectively lighter than last year's models. Tire clearance is now up to 42mm. Cable routing is internal and there's even accommodation for an internal dropper post. Changes to frame shape include a flatter top tube for more comfortable shouldering, and thinner seatstays for a more compliant ride. All the bikes are disc only, with thru-axles front and rear. Scott calls the new Addict CX the lightest bog hopper on the market. We cant verify that claim just yet, but the new rig from the Swiss bike maker is certainly a looker, with its modern tube shapes and clever CX-specific touches. Claimed frame weight for a size 54cm composite frame is a wispy 890 grams, with the fork adding another 360 grams. Braking is disc brake only, and the frame is set up to accommodate Shimano's new flat mount calipers. You can run traditional calipers using an adapter.

Comfort is the other big marketing push for this bike. Scott claims that overall the new bike is 60 percent more cushy than its predecessor. The new Addict CX will be available in the U.S. sometime in August and retail for $5900. Spec will include a SRAM Force 1 drivetrain with hydraulic disc brakes, Syncros carbon cockpit and seatpost, and Syncros RP1.0 carbon clincher disc wheels. Focus Mares CX Disc Team

Change is strictly cosmetic for the top-end CX race bike from Focus. The model year 2016 Mares CX Disc now comes painted in full stars-and-stripes livery in tribute to reigning U.S. national cyclocross champion Jeremy Powers, who's primary sponsor is the German bike maker. Spec on the disc-equipped bike includes a full SRAM Force 1 drivetrain, DT Swiss wheels and Schwalbe tires. MSRP is $4250. More info at www.focus-bikes.com

Parlee Z Zero XD

High end Boston-area bike maker Parlee was at Sea Otter showing off its new Z Zero XD frameset, a more dirt/gravel oriented version of its flagship Z Zero road frame. While not calling it an out and out cyclocross bike, the full composite XD (as in cross disc) has clearance for up to 40mm tires achieved via wider chainstays and seatstays. Framesets are built in Massachusetts and will run $7900 for what's essentially a semi-custom package with six available sizes. Buyers can specify lay-up preference based on riding style and desired ride feel, and determine cabling preference and port location. The fork can be ordered to accommodate thru-axle or QR, while the rear dropouts are modular and will place nice with either. Paint is Parlee Level I, which as you can see here looks great. There are also integrated fender mounts if you're looking to build up the ultimate chi-chi commuter. More info at www.parleecycles.com

Polygon Bend CX

New from Indonesian brand Polygon bikes is the Bend CX. Like Polygon's current lineup, the Bend uses ACX Advanced Carbon for the frame and fork with a reinforced BB area for improved handling and stiffness. The ACX carbon fork uses a 15mm thru-axle and the rear has 142x12 spacing. The Bend is a "full on cyclocross bike" and not a gravel grinder stressed Polygon's PR man Matt Karous. It has steeper race type geometry with a little bit higher bottom bracket.

The Bend CX is currently available with a Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset, Shimano R785 hydraulic disc brakes, and a Novatec CXD tubeless ready wheelset with Schwalbe Racing Ralph Evo tires. Available sizes run 52cm-62cm in just the pictured pain scheme.

Raleigh RX S

For singlespeed CX racers, Raleigh has you covered with the belt drive-equipped RX S. The redesigned rig has thru axles front and rear, comes with tubeless ready wheels, and will only set you back $1500. Raleigh has also launched a women's bike, the full carbon RX W Elite. Saving weight was a primary design driver, so the bike is spec'd with cantilever brakes. MSRP is $2750. And finally, the bike maker showed off a prototype of its new Avail Rokar carbon fiber gravel bike (pictured below) that will be available in fall. It will come with thru-axles front and rear, three bottle mounts, and have clearance for up to 40mm tires. More info at www.raleighusa.com

Turner Cyclosys

Dave Turner was at Sea Otter showing his first drop bar equipped bike, the Cyclosys. This bike evolved from a rig Turner was riding and racing himself for the last few years. The Cyclosys is an alloy framed cyclocross bike that can pull gravel grinder duty. It has tire clearance up to 43mm and is paired with a TRP carbon fork with a tapered steerer tube and a 15QR axle (disc brake only, of course).

The bike is available in sizes from 47cm-59cm, and comes in black with sky blue or raw metal. For the raw finish Cyclosys, the MSRP for frame and fork is $1500. A Shimano Ultegra build runs $3776, and the SRAM CX1 is $4237. Add $100 for the black/sky blue paint. Custom powder coat color options are also available for a $250 upgrade. Mongoose Selous Expert

If you've seen Chris Akrigg's CHRISCROSS 2 video, than you have seen the Mongoose Selous in action. This disc brake equipped cross bike is back for 2016 and the expert level gets upgraded with a 12mm thru-axle carbon fork that has clearance for 40mm tires. It also gets Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. The frame is double-butted aluminum meant for both cyclocross and gravel grinding. The 2x drivetrain is a mix of Shimano 105 and Sora components. Norco Search

Canadian brand Norco bills the new Search as an "adventure" road bike. It's targeted towards the rider that will ride 80 percent road, 20 percent dirt, but wants a head-up style of riding. It features a carbon frame with a claimed weight of under 1000 grams. The carbon fork features a 15mm thru-axle and has clearance for 40mm tires. Compliance is built into the rear-end via Norco's ARC stays. It is fender and rack compatible and it will fit up to 38mm tires with fenders in the rear. The Norco Search is available in 3 models (Search XR, Search Ultegra, Search 105) not counting the highly different, more affordable steel frame models.
