As much as I love it, I simply do not have the time to give my bike the attention it deserves. I'm a single dad with two bikes and not enough time to ride either. One has to go. After much contemplation, I've decided to part with the roadbike. (The mountainbike gets more use with an 8-year old around.)

I thought that getting a trainer would make the difference, but it's not the same. That gets even less use.

Since I have never sold anything of this value before, please give tips on selling this bike.

I chose to leave out the details of the bike because I thought it may be in poor taste to post a "classified" on the discussion board without paying. It will most likely be posted on this site's classified section when it goes up for sale officially, but I wanted to hear everybody's input before I did anything.

Is anybody willing to impart some wisdom on this process?

Good idea, but I've decided against it

That's the beauty of inanimate objects - they don't care if you ignore them (they don't care at all). If you have no financial reason to get rid of the bike, and you like the bike, then throw a sheet over it to keep the dust off and forget about it a while. You may have more time later - or perhaps may yet be able to ride it every once in a while.

That's the idea I've had since last August, but I have finally decided it's not the best choice. I like a lot, but it's over $1500 worth of bike just sitting there. I'd rather have the money now and then buy a new bike in the future when I have the chance to ride more regularly. The only chance I'll ever have to ride it is on Sunday. Any other time would be time spent on the trainer and that's not for me. I have a Kurt Kinetic that pretty much sits there.

For now, the mountain bike will have to suffice if I desire to ride.

I knew I'd get ripped off, but c'mon!

I had a $1500 roadbike that I sold when I needed money desperately. Only got $650 for it and it was in "like new" condition, 3 years old. Now that times are better I wish I had it back.

Wow! Only $650 on a $1500? I was thinking I'd get at least half!

Before I bought mine, I was going to go used and they were going for well over half the price of a new bike. That's why I purchased a new bike versus a used one. The discount on used wasn't big enough.

And I think I was lucky that it sold at all. It's a Cannondale, and there are lots of them listed on ebay with no bids. It was the Campy parts that got mine sold. Mine came in around 50%, but that's because I paid a nice low online price for it to begin with.

If you need the money, of course sell it. If you have space for a hook, I'd hang it on the wall for a couple years. You're likely to lose lots of money selling it now, and will feel it even more when you buy another one in a couple years time.

While I really appreciate every single reply to my thread, this is what I was hoping for. Can you give me some tips on selling it? While everybody is making a good case against it, I'd at least like to test the waters for a while just to see if I can make a deal with somebody.

If I don't, it won't kill me. I lust after it, but it's just impractical to have it around right now. I can't just hang it in the garage and forget about it for a couple of years...I live in a tiny 2BR apartment. It drives me a little nuts to have it just sit there. I do put it on the trainer about one or twice a month, but I hate it. And I will certainly ride it on Sundays when it warms up. But honestly, I think it's more practical to have $700 or so dollars less debt, than to keep a bike I only have time to ride once a week. Besides, I have a nice Schwinn Homegrown to ride (with my 8-year old son). It sits around too much as well, but I know I'm not getting any $$$ out of an older used XC bike.
