Bollé was on hand at the Sea Otter Classic with a large variety of glasses. They have been making sport oriented goggles and glasses for many years, mainly for the snow industry and for the cycling world as well. We take a close up look at the 6th Sense and the all new Diamondback models.
Bollé 6th Sense - Competitor Series
The 6th Sense is Bollé's flag ship, high performance cycling glasses used by Pro Tour teams like Orica Greenedge and AG2R La Mondiale. The 6th Sense feature what Bollé calls their "b-clear" lightweight Trivex lenses that are lighter than polycarbonate and this allows for larger designs and fuller coverage without added weight. The Trivex material has a higher optical clarity rating than polycarbonate only slightly less then pure glass lenses. The 6th Sense weights about 28 grams and has logo plaques that provide branding and style. If you want a functional reason to use the side pieces, you can say that they help keep sunlight from coming in on the sides. These glasses also have an adjustable nose piece for instant custom fit, hydrophopic rubber for comfort and grip and the lenses are vented to help prevent fogging.
In addition, Bollé has an RX version of the 6th Sense for those of us with less than perfect vision. The RX inserts are inline, placed directly into the lenses. They are the only company doing the RX inserts like this and is a much better alternative to the typical double layer lens inserts that snap in. Bollé is able to handle prescriptions from -8 to +6 which they say "covers 99% of all prescriptions out there".
The 6th Sense from Bollé comes in a variety of colors and even comes in a 6th Sense "S" for those of you with a smaller face that prefer a more narrow, custom fit. These are part of Bollé's Competitor Series and they are available now and the prices ranges from $160 to $190 depending on the frame options you select (like photochromic lenses).
The Bollé Diamondback is from their Sport Lifestyle Series and features polycarbonate lenses (click to enlarge).
Bollé Diamondback - Sport Lifestyle Series
Recently released from Bollé is their new Diamondback model. It's not named after the bike company, but it follows the naming convention used in many of their other models named after types of snakes (Kingsnake, Python, Copperhead). These can be used on the bike, but they look good off the bike as well. They have a wraparound styling that is popular and protective. Bollé calls this line of sunglasses their Sport Lifestyle Series.
The Diamondback model is made in Italy and the frame is made from a tough quality nylon that is both strong and light. The lenses are polycarbonate for strength without the high price of their Trivex models. The Diamondback also features Thermogrip temple tips and nose pads, which is a hydrophilic material with moisture-absorbing properties to help keep the glasses securely and comfortably in place. They also have Carbo Glas coating, which is an "armor shell" applied to both sides of the lens to protect from scratches and other damage.
The Bollé Diamondback is available in 3 different colors with a price ranging from $100 to $120.
