just change the big chainring. i have an FSA Pro Road 50 on one bike
and it shifts fine.

i'd imagine that they're less worried about appearances(qien es mas Macho?)
that a '50' would show compared to a 53, but i'm not from there, so...
i'll just say they're probably more practical when it comes to gearing choices
for the mountains.

Why not just get a 13-25 cassette, to use with your 53? (the 53X13 will allow you to spin up to 36/37 mph)

Good point.

Won't there be a longer chain on the 53? Slightly, ever so slightly better shifting performane on the 50?

You'll never be able to tell

Not better.....just 10/20 grams less weight. (not enough to make a difference, unless you are a Cat 1, fighting for a "Pro" contract)
