Hi there,
Trying to set up my bike for France in July.
I've usually got the 7800 Dura Ace gruppo on but I've made some modifications.
I've replaced the crank with a 50/34 Compact Ultegra SL.
Got a 11-28 SRAM Force rear cassette.
New Dura Ace 10 speed chain.
My question is will a rear Force derailleur work with the Dura Ace shifters?
If not, will a medium cage Ultegra rear derailleur work even though specs say the max is 27T?
thanks!

From what I have read, it should work, however not sure how well. A few months ago I thought about getting the 11-28 cassette and it was supposed to work fine with the DA stuff.

I thought the pull was different and it wouldn't work.

AKAIK, the Force derailleur WILL NOT work with DA shifters.

The Ultegra rear mech should work OK with the 11-28tooth cassette.

no...

A SRAM RD will not work with Shimano shifters. The cable pull is not even close to the same.

What matters for the RD is actual wrap capacity. You have a 33T wrap, but the 34/11 would never be used and neither should the 50/28.

I would check the chain length in the 34/12, making it as long as possible. If the chain does not hang loose or rub on the cage, any amount of chain tension is enough. Then check the 50/28. Most likely it will work, even with a short cage RD. Any Shimano RD with more wrap will certainly work.

Before switching to SRAM gruppos I ran 12-28 and 11-28 on both Ultegra and DA RD bikes. It worked just fine with a compact crank up front. I had no shifting issues.

There's a pulley available to mix and match pull ratios. It's like 30 bucks.

The cassette and chain will work fine.
A SRAM RD will NOT work with DA shifters.
A Ultegra SS cage will work as long as your chain is as long as possible and you don't accidentally shift into the big ring/big cog combo.

It would be better to get a long cage Ultegra SL. You can forget what gear you're in too easily climbing alps.

not sure why you'd want to buy a sram derailleur when you have a nice one already...but this works great http://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm check #5 at the bottom. as someone stated (c-40?) you won't go 34-11 or 50-28 (or at least shouldn't...much...) so you should be fine w/ your short cage DA rr der.
