Funny. A buddy of mine is in town from Switzerland and we were talking about this on our ride today. We both raced years ago and felt that the combo of very bad team management by the teams and poor overall sport management by the UCI Pro has led road cycling to be stagnant for 20 years. Adjusted for inflation none of todays teams have the budget of Banesto 20 years ago.
On the positive side the sport is far more diverse then it was 20 years ago. I am amazed how big Cross is. Cyclosportif's and GF's are huge. While WC MTn biking may be stagnant the stage racing and endurance side is doing well.
Pro road cycling is no longer the only place a rider can make a living. This number also does not include the UCI Continental Teams like Rock Racing. There are a bunch of them these days
