Whenever I go all out on a hard ride, I finish with a lot more of a side ache/stitch than sore/exhausted muscles. Is it because I'm sucking air too hard? What are the best training techniques to minimize the problem?

I was out for run last winter and got a side stitch. I stuck my thumb between my ribs and massaged where the stitch felt like it was coming from. The stitch went away immediatly. I think the pain comes from the intercostal muscles between the ribs. I haven't had a stitch since then, so I can't verify if the technique works every time. Go out and get yoursef a stitch and see if my massage technique works.
