Hello, I'm new to this CX thing, but I am pretty set on ordering an Trek Ion CX this week. I know there are some better bikes out there for the money, but through my local shop and former employer, to me looks like the best option.

I cant seem to figure out size on this thing. I'm 6'4" pretty average build I think, maybe longer than average legs. Most the shops are recommending the 61, the biggest size they make, with the 34" stand over it seems rather large to me. No one in the boston area has any ~60cm CX bikes in stock, so I cant take a spin on one. I will be doing some racing, but a lot of the riding will be 40-60 mile road rides, with some dirt and fireroads in there.

Any thoughts?

I think the 61 would be the size for you. Standover height really is not that important for a cross bike as it will have a slightly higher BB than a road bike. Besides, when do you really stand over your top tube? The 58 will be too small.

Haha, that video is great.

Thanks for the help, some of the shops I called were talking about standover, so I assumed it was somewhat important for CX, I thought it seemed odd as well.

I found a place that had some, I sat on some 58's and they felt rather small. Ordered up a 61, pretty pumped on it. Trek also had next to nothing in stock left. About 4, Specialized had even less.

Its unfortunate the paint they put on them, way over the top in my opinion. And painting isnt a big option since it will void the warranty. Oh well, cant wait to ride it.

Thanks for all the help.

Post a pic when you have it set up. I am 6'2" with a 93.5cm inseam and will be looking at the 61cm Ion. I will use mine for road riding 90% of time. The handlebar to saddle drop is better for me on the 61cm vs 58cm. If I was going to race cyclocross, I would consider the the 58cm. I think you made the right choice on the 61cm. The 58cm would have given you a big handlebar to saddle drop. Some guys/gals can handle it but most of us can't.

without knowing your body proportions.....

I suggest:
Fit Calculator - Competitive Cyclist

go measure yourself and input into the calculator and it will spit out some results for you

Will do, picking it up soon. I think the saddle to bar drop would have killed me on the 58, especially coming from mountain bikes. I ordered up some salsa cowbell handlebars too to see if I like the feel, my hands dont fit well on the ergo bars. I decided to try these because I very rarely ride in the drops on my current lemond because my shoulders do something funny ~40 miles into a ride, kind of like a pinched nerve, but it is old and too small, we will see.

Also, I will give that fit calc a try, just to see.
