and properly so, since I indeed should not have used his forum, on one of my rhetorical joyrides, to recruit converts to another. Poor form. For that I apologize. I'm so used to arguing with Live Steam here that I take it over the top at the drop of a hat, and that's about what happened yesterday.

It's true I find this format so annoying I probably won't have the patience and energy to participate much anymore, but the fact is, you all should give it a chance, get used to it, and make up your own minds. It'll be a different experience, but given the underlying fundament of good and interesting folks here, it'll still be a good one. Gregg and Co. are under enough stress navigating this change without having to take a bunch of crap from a bunch of spoiled roadies. Or THIS spoiled roadie anyway.

Cheers,
Ed

an idea

Yes, I guess that is sort of uncool. Sort of like asking your wife if she can set you up with a new girlfriend.

Try this. From the page listing the threads, right click on the hyperlink, then click from the menu "Open in New Window." That will open a new page with the thread and messages. I use the "Hybrid" listing. That will show the thread and all the messages below. Then, don't close that window, but instead periodically refresh it. If you reply to a message, again click on the "Open in New Window" option, but then close that window after you submit your reply. Essentially, then, you keep separate windows open for your active discussions, and can follow the main page by refreshing it occasionally.

I have to admit I liked the old format better, too, and when we switched the last time the one comment I had was to keep the page view showing all the threads and replies. I thought that was what made this sight so attractive. Now, it's the people who make it so, rather than the technical aspects of it, but I think it only developed like it did over the years because of the software. I really hope they rework the software to make it possible to show all the threads like before, or I fear that over time we will lose people. Nonetheless, stick it out, as for now it's the people who make it worthwhile.

well........

Just click your red high heals together Ed and repeat- ""There is no place like home, my spandex is to tight, theres no place like home, my spandex is to tight, theres no place like home, you know the rest"" =P

Despite the lameness of the new board, I think it would be a mistake to leave. It is unusual to find the kind of atmosphere presented here, especially in the cycling world. Stay, bite your tongue and feel free to *****, but stay. Take up arms against the facism! LOL

So, sit back, drink a cold one or two, look at some dirty pictures of bike porn, play some redeye 3 oclock in the morning Jazz and speak your mind--What do you have to lose?

=)

That's a typical democrat for ya'!

Blame someone else  Well I am sorry that you have trouble controlling yourself because of me, old buddy :D You have to understand I had eight years of tutelage from watching the likes of Carville, Begala and the rest of the Clinton machine. They certainly knew how to bring out the worst in their adversaries

Don't go! Oh please don't go and leave us with Czar! I hate this format too. Any way, it may not last if they don't get ample traffic on it.

The way I am trying to think about it:

I just have to get used to scanning each THREAD, instead of scanning the BOARD. I can use the same heuristics to scan, but I just can't use them at the board level anymore. That's the problem, and it makes it harder to deal with reading/posting in multiple threads at a visit. This means more clicking and scanning time at my end.

But from conversations on MTBR, it is pretty clear that the full expanded threaded board is NOT going to happen with this software. I think it COULD, but it might be more work than it is worth.

Hey Ed! Chill! Look, each version has it advantages and disadvantages, it's just a question of what you're used to, and you can get used to either. Once everyone gets used to this new format it will get a lot better. IMO the "hybrid" thread display mode is the worst of both worlds. Just set your display mode to "linear," stop using the titles, quote the person or persons you are replying to if you want, and it will work just fine. Tell TJ to quite being such a wuss and get over here. He should be able to fix his logon issues by e-mailing Gregg.

Thanks for the response, Ed.

I was having a rough day yesterday, trying to answer all the questions, help convince people that the new boards are better, then I came across that post and I was a little disappointed. I know I should have expected it, given the responses received on MTBR, but I guess I take things a little harder on RBR. The community on RBR is smaller and in some ways, more closely knit than that on MTBR.

Besides my own personal attachment to the RBR community and not wanting to see anyone leave … this site depends on it’s community for success, and as manager of the site, I cannot allow people to use our boards to try and “migrate” the community here, and take them elsewhere.

I've built up a pretty good "internet skin" about criticisms and complaints, but any comments/criticisms cut just a little deeper when it’s from board regulars, like yourself.

Thanks for understanding, and with your permission, I'd like to remove the top thread from the old Non-cycling board.

Also, to everyone, believe me, if there WAS an easy way to add "threading" to the forum index page (not just to the individual threads) I would have already done it. Vbulletin only very recently added threading within the specific threads (the latest 3.0 version, which is what we're using. In fact, we were using and testing the beta version of 3.0 months before this launch).

Better?

You were trying to convince people that teh new forums are better??? WTF? I don;t think you could convince many people that the new ones aren't any worse than the old ones.

Exactly what would you tell someone to make them believe this is better?

A lot actually...

...and you are already using one of them. Avatars, profiles, signatures are now available.

You can edit your posts.

You can subscribe to posts to alert you, so you don't have to keep checking to see who replies to your posts.

You can use the Member List to search for other users in your area, etc...

You can use Private Messages to contact fellow board members....

There's more here:

Observation only

FWIW Olds been logged on to the system ever since I've been here at around 7am PST, it's now 12pm. He's actively viewing discussions. He is simply not joining in. It's right there for everyone to see.

I didn't quite believe his earlier post anyway.

Is this the kiss and make up part of the thread?

I too have been afoul of temperment this past week! Yea, verily did 10" of snow fall followed by 6" a few days later. I battled mightly on a campaign of snow sculpturing, and did finally prevail!

Huzzah!

No need for the gym this week.

randomness from long ago

a trip down memory lane when ed was advocating a revolt because of the new format and suggesting we all go post on some other board.
