I have several wheelsets. Some rear hubs -- Ultegra and Specialized -- roll quietly. Others, including ROL, Velocity and Mavic, make the familiar tick tick tick sound. What are your thoughts on rear hub noises? Is silent better? Do you like to hear you rear wheel spin while coasting? What makes a hub quiet versus noisy? Are higher-end wheels generally more quiet?

my DA 8 makes a little clicking, but it's not obnoxious. my Ultegra 10 is completely silent.

some hubs sound like a garbage disposal grinding up silverware...really nasty. that would drive me nuts listening to that level of noise.

They all seem to make different noises. It can all depend on how much/what type of lube is in the engagement system, the construction of the engagement system, even your rims and frame can influence the noise. I do agree though - it is fascinating that some hubs are quiet while some are quite sharp and metallic sounding.
