Japanese Cycling Giant Unveils $299 Mini Waterproof Camera With WiFi Connectivity

Look out GoPro. You have some new competition - and it's coming from the world's leading cycling drivetrain maker, Shimano.

The new CM-1000 Sport Camera is the first product introduction from the Japanese giant's Lifestyle Gear Division, which will target both cycling and fishing. (Remember that Shimano is also one of the world's largest fishing gear makers.)

The new camera will be available in May with an MSRP of $299. It's being billed as a lightweight and compact high-definition video camera with advanced connectivity options. You can view a pair of sample videos on the Shimano website and see a review of numerous other mini-camera's here.

Features of the camera include a F2.0 lens for enhanced low-light performance, a 16MP back illuminated CMOS image sensor the produces 1080p HD video, and it has the capability to shoot in standard angle 135° and super wide 180° modes, while a 90° increment auto image rotation means users can flip the camera in multiple directions but maintain a horizontal image plane.

Claimed weight is 86 grams including battery and lens cover. It measures 44x70x30mm, or roughly the size of a standard deck of playing cards. The CM-1000 is also waterproof up to 10 meters straight out of the box without the need for an external case. This depth meets the IPX-8 waterproof standard, the top rating for electronics experiencing continuous underwater use.

Translation: 2.3 inches by 1.7 inches. Yep, it's small.

And of course, you can control the camera with your smartphone. The CM-1000 utilizes WiFi connectivity and custom iOS and Android apps for mobile devices to allow live viewing, video playback, remote adjustments to camera settings, and shot framing.

The CM-1000 will also link up to ANT+ and ANT private wireless connections to transmit data from bicycle computers and accessories (including the new Shimano D-Fly wireless Di2 transmitter) to show performance cycling data such as heart rate, gear indication and cadence in captured videos. Controlling the camera is done via a two-button design, while dual LED lights and audible cues identify settings.

The CM-1000 Sport Camera comes standard with the camera and lens cover, an adhesive mount and vented helmet mount, a USB cable and start up manual. Software for Windows 7 and Mac OS enable video editing, fish-eye view compensation, and the display and integration of video and ANT+/ANT information to videos. Additional accessories that can be purchased separately will include tool-free mounts for handlebars, chest, head or helmet.
