Maybe.
I used a SRAM mtb rear with Shimano Ultegra 10 speed shifters to help out a friend in a pinch last year.
It worked ok....
BUT...I'd recommend: Just get the correct stuff and do it right

not an easy answer like the old days.

Any SRAM RD which says "exact actuation" will work with their road shifters (XX for example). The older "1:1" RDs will not.

All the new 10 speed mountain bike derailleurs use the same Exact Actuation cable pull ratio so will work. So XX and new 2011 model year X.0, X.9 and X.7.

This might not be the answer you're looking for, but two weeks ago I switched out my Rival rear deraileur and 12-26 cassette to a apex medium cage rear deraileur and 11-32 rear cassette, I had to put on a longer chain. Shifting wise, everything works just fine. I have the Rival shifters, no issues.
