I'm looking to replace the ancient fork on my 58 merlin with a new one. It's got a threaded headset and stem already, so I'm going to stick with threaded, but I don't know what steerer length to order. Will have the LBS put it on for me.....Any guesses?

you should be able to get a preaty good estimate measureing from the bottom of the bottom headset cup to the top of the locking nut, then just add a few cm's to that number. You can always cut it shorted if needed. The final length with depend on the combination of your head tube length and the head set you are using.
