On a x bike, is there a prefered stem length? I had a x that was too long for me. I put a really short stem on it, set the seat foward and it handled pretty good. But, it was a band aid. When ordering my new frame, what stem length should I design into it? Will be doing small local races and zooming around on the trails. Thanks.

i'd mirror the setup you've got on your road bike, based on the total top tube/stem length. perhaps slightly shorter for the cross bike if you prefer.

I prefer just slightly shorter TT-Stem length

and prefer to make it up by a shorter stem. Stems in the 100-120 range to me provide the best stability / agility combo.

120 max...

I would go to 120 as your max length. Also, most prefer a taller stack height (more spacers) for cross. You will spend most of your times in the hoods, but when you do go to the drops you dont want to have to bend/reach too much. A more upright stable positions that allows you to control the bike and react quickly to obstacles is better than a tt aero position. My 2 cents only.
