Stupid Belgian Fans and Other Observations:

Watching the Three Days of De Panne on Cycling.tv, I noticed that the Belgians still paint “VDB” all over the damn road. Yeah, they’re cheering for Franck Vandenbroucke (Unibet.com). For some reason. I remember watching Liege-Bastogne-Liege from 2003, won by Tyler Hamilton, and painted all over the road was, “VDB, VDB, The King is back!”

No, he’s not. Seriously, guys, it’s over. I’m happy that Vandenbroucke is making another comeback, getting over depression and drug use and whoever knows what else. Sure, he had some decent wins, and you could chalk up his problems once to being a troubled youth. That was when he was a 20-year old whiz kid. That was over 10 years ago.

All right, so he’s Belgian, and the Belgies have been looking for their “next Eddy Merckx” since the Cannibal hung ‘em up.

Um, hello? Guys? You notice the other guy in the race, the tall Belgian with the World Champion’s jersey on? That would be Tom Boonen, of course. Belgian? Check. Winning races? Check.

The King is dead. Long live the king.

One unrelated thing: anyone notice the latest issue of Cycle Sport America? In its discussion of Discovery channel, you see a pic of Tom Danielson's training Trek. The wheels confused me for a moment: the rims are badged "Bontrager Race X Lite." They have 32 spokes, laced 2/3X.

Oh. I get it now. Very cute.

Don't condemn the entire Belgian fan base just because VDB is painted on the road.

Trust me, on Sporza (Flemish TV), all they talk about is Tom, and rightly so :)

What you don't seem to realize is that Belgian fans have their favorites, just like everyone else in the world of sport and watching sport. VDB has a large fan base regardless of what he has done and what he has been through over the last years. Same held true for Pantani, Virenque, and other so-called washed up doped up riders. I have to actually admire them for this, as they are willing to stand by their guy no matter what happens. Sort of like the Lance fans in this forum. No matter what happens, they're going to be Lance fans. Same for the Tyler fans. No matter what happens, they're going to by Tyler fans. Painting his name on the road is a good way to show the guy that they're still behind him no matter what. What is so stupid about that? Call it blind allegiance, call it whatever you will, but they stand behind their guy, I have to call that good stuff right there. I would say the same for the Lance boys and the Tyler boys and the Virenque boys. I might not understand it myself, but I can respect it.

He's actually not been riding poorly so far this year. Then again, he's not been impressive at all either. He looks relatively fat compared to the VDB that was winning classics a few years ago. He was always a phenom, I find it hard to believe he simply out-doped all the other guys who were doping. If he could get his head on straight he could probably at least influence the outcome in big races.

My sentiments exactly, in fact I was going to post a new topic with the same basic points. I still like Frank.......and he's sporting a sweet mullet these days.

The Real Deal

Yeah, VDB's actually been looking decent this season. More power to him.

For anyone who hasn't had their coffee and vicodin this morning, tongue-in-cheek inflammatory sarcasm is pretty common from yours truly.

And the mullet. Man, he looks spiffy with that.
