Just got a letter from Subaru... apparently the passenger-side airbag on my 2011 Impreza Outback Sport is a potential lethal weapon. AND they don't have the part to fix it yet. But don't let anyone sit in the passenger seat until it's fixed.

Letter said the affected models/years were:

2003-06 Baja
2003-04 Legacy
2003-04 Outback
2010-11 Legacy
2010-11 Outback
2009-11 Forester
2006-11 Tribeca
2006-11 Impreza (inc. WRX and STI)

Yay. :(

Friends of mine have one of these cars, and they were lucky enough to get a replacement air bag. The dealer told them the backlog could be years.

It's almost like Subaru expects some of those cars to be retired before they have to pony up to fix them.

It's a pretty big hassle to not be able to use the passenger seat, much less for months or years.

I am now a chauffeur, 'parently. Might as well become an Uber driver.

A friend of mine has a Ford truck that was on the recall list due to those airbags. He had to wait 3 or 4 months because the dealers couldn't get the part.

I was notified September last year that my Impreza was recalled, finally had it replaced last month. 11 months to get the part, about an hour to get it changed.

Maybe I can get the airbag turned off somehow?

I had to deal with this about a decade ago.

Normally there is a pressure switch built into the passenger seat that keeps the airbag off until a preset (50 lbs?) weight is detected. Find a wiring diagram and splice an on/off switch into the wire for the pressure switch, then you can shut if off now and reactivate it when the airbag is replaced.

Check with the dealer/car company. My wife has a Honda and we are waiting for the parts. Honda is giving us a loaner at no cost to us until the part comes in. When we found that was an option we jumped for it. Rather do that than to have someone injured or killed.

We have 2 cars with this air bag issue and I know we are not getting loaners for both of us.

I've got separate recalls on drivers and front passengers airbags in my Honda 2010 Insight, with no actual estimated repair time, thanks to the 20 million other recalls. I think this also makes it impossible to sell the car...

On some cars, there's an ON/OFF switch to deactivate the passenger airbag. Often, the switch is small and sort of hidden. But I don't know if such (and that's a big if) a switch in the OFF position would also keep an unintentional discharge or explosion of the inflator cartridge from happening.

With my 2005 Mazda 6i, I've just received my 4th letter on this issue and have to look forward to my third trip to the dealership 40 miles away whenever they get the part.

I got a letter in February. They were back-ordered for months. Wasn't fixed until late June. Get in line. More models than that. I have an 06 Outback.

Its a stupid request by Subaru. WE both scoffed when we read it.

I ran our VIN numbers thru the Subaru USA recall site and neither car came up.

I wonder if it's not all vehicles in those model years.

Why not have people sit in the front passenger seat???? If someone gets hurt, you can sue Subaru for a Zillion $$$$$$.
